Event data recorder

An event data recorder (EDR) is a device that records various activities of a vehicle, including engine overheating and road events such as accidents, while the vehicle is in motion. The data are issued from the SVRAI project (Saving Lives through Road Incident Analysis Feedback) supported by the French government between 2010 and 2015. This project relies on the use of an Event Data Recorder called EMMA (Embedded data logger for accident mechanisms) specifically designed by IFSTTAR-LMA (Lechner et al. 2015) to record incidents. 51 EDR were implemented on public light vehicles fleets, in three regions of France. The data collection started in August 2012 and lasted one year (Ledoux et al. 2014).

Police-crash reports do not provide information about travel speed prior to a crash, but this information can be recovered from event data recorders (EDRs). EDRs record information about the status and operation of vehicle systems and vehicle dynamics, including velocity, seconds before and after a crash. The data elements, recording interval, and sampling rate of information collected by EDRs are regulated (Event Data Recorders 2011), and, although EDRs are not required equipment, virtually every new vehicle is equipped with one.
