The Sobel operator is widely used in edge-detection applications. It is a discrete differential operator which generates a differential image from the original image, when changes in gray levels becomes prominent. The derivative formula is given by (5)G=Gx2+Gy2

The Sobel operator is predominantly utilized for detecting edges, and it is in fact a discrete differential operator used to ascertain the estimate of the angle of the image luminance work. The Sobel operator is a run of the mill edge identification operator dependent on the primary subordinate. Because of the operator in the presentation of a comparative nearby normal activity, the noise has a smooth impact and can successfully take out the effect of commotion. The impact of the Sobel operator on the situation of the pixel is weighted, which is superior to the Prewitt operator and the Roberts operator.

This consists of the sequential processing of edge detection, edge enhancement, thresholding, edge line extraction, and morphology operation. For the edge detection operation, the Sobel operator is applied. A local window function, called adaptive contrast enhancement at edges [14], is employed to improve the edge contrast. The resultant image is thresholded with an optimal threshold based on the Otsu method [15]. The reference line can be obtained using the Hough transform [12–14].

In this method, Sobel operator is used for image edge detection, so as to achieve the purpose of image edge information enhancement. Sobel operator uses local difference to find the edge in the image. It combines Gaussian smoothing and differential derivation, and finally calculates the approximate value of the gradient. The Sobel operator is convoluted with the X-ray image to obtain the edge of the image. Sobel operator is usually composed of horizontal template and vertical template, which are used to extract the horizontal edge and vertical edge in the image respectively. This article uses a 5 × 5 sobel operator to smooth the image, then multiplies it with the original image points to obtain a masked image of the image and extract important edges from the X-ray film. Finally, the mask image and the original image are weighted and overlaid to obtain the final edge enhanced image. The Sobel operator formula (1) is as follows:

The Sobel operator is a discrete first-order difference operator that calculates the first-order gradient approximation of the luminance function. The Sobel operator uses the gray-scale linear weighting algorithm, which weights the surrounding pixels of the underlying pixel, obtains the extreme value at the edge of the image, and uses this feature to perform edge detection. Sobel operator is not accurate at noisy pixels that can be wrongly considered as edges. The Canny edge detection method [29] was proposed to extract effective information from different visual systems, and then reduce the amount of data to be analyzed. It can be used in several visual systems having the same requirements.
