Wind Resource Assessment
Published in Vaughn Nelson, Kenneth Starcher, Wind Energy, 2018
Vaughn Nelson, Kenneth Starcher
Wind maps are available for countries and regions around the world because wind energy is now included in many national energy policies. Check with national energy institutions for information available and latest data. The Global Wind Atlas [10] is a web-based application (1-km resolution) for policy makers and investors to help them identify potential wind power locations. The tool has online queries, downloadable datasets, and digital maps showing global, regional, and country wind resource potential. Other sources for wind maps are RETScreen International [11] and the Renewable Energy Data Explorer [12] has 13 international countries.
Evaluation of wind energy potential: a case study

The Global Wind Atlas (GWA) is a useful tool for researchers to get a better understanding of wind resource potential at the provincial and local levels, with the possibility of exploration and preliminary wind resource assessment before the stations are installed on the wind site (Global Wind Atlas 2020). This atlas was formed by analyzing wind data, wind site roughness information, environment obstacle information, and the region’s geographical and topographic structure (Global Wind Atlas 2020). The annual mean wind speed map of the Kırklareli province and studied location for 100 meters are shown in Figure 1.
Global status of wind power generation: theory, practice, and challenges

The wind climatology including wind speed profile along with wind power density is a vast area of research and dissuasion, especially when it is to be explored on a global scale. Different wind characterizing parameters in relation to wind energy development on the global scale can be found from many of the online data sets available such as https://globalwindatlas.info/;https://www.irena.org. Such types of wind atlas can be used for the preliminary assessment of wind power generation potential across the globe.
