Low Cost Carriers in Southeast Asia: A Preliminary Analysis
Published in Werner Delfmann, Herbert Baum, Stefan Auerbach, Sascha Albers, Strategie Management in the Aviation Industry, 2017
ValuAir operates on a very simple and transparent fare structure. Current on-time departure performance level is at 99.5% which is one of the highest in the industry. In another departure from AirAsia, ValuAir actually relies on the main gateways such as Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 1, Bangkok International Airport Terminal 2 (just like SIA), Hong Kong’s Chep Lap Kok Airport, and the Soekamo-Hatta Jakarta International Airport Terminal 2.

Airport terminal building has some physical and virtual boundaries defining the operational processes in levels like departure and arrival, and division of airside to landside, also known as a sterile lounge to meeters and greeters lounge for the passengers(Edwards 2005). Airside is the place for the passengers and employees who serve to process passenger flow (Barnett et al. 2004; Jones et al. 2010). Passengers in the airside create an intensive heating area around the congestion areas (Sobotta et al. 2010). In addition, passengers spend extra time in the waiting lounges and around the duty-free halls, which will fly for long hours(Graham 2009; Malaval and Benaroya 2002). Extra cooling and ventilating, meaning energy consumption, may be necessary for these occasions (Baxter and Srisaeng 2018; Baxter, Sabtini, and Wild 2015).

An airport terminal is a building at an airport where passengers transfer between ground transportation and the facilities that allow them to board and disembark from aircraft. Within the terminal, passengers purchase tickets, check-in, transfer their luggage, and go through security. The buildings that provide access to the aircraft (via gates) are typically called concourses. However, the terms ‘terminal’ and ‘concourse’ are sometimes used interchangeably, depending on the configuration of the airport. Many works (cf. Merkert et al. (2012) and Fung et al. (2008)) take terminal size as the index of capability of a passenger terminal in providing service for passengers. Dubai International Airport, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Terminal 3, became the largest single Terminal building in the world with an area of over 1,713,000 m2 when it opened on October 14, 2008. It can handle in excess of 60 million passengers per year. Beijing Capital International Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport and Mexico City International Airport have the world's second, third, fourth and fifth largest single terminals (986,000 m2, 570,000 m2, 563,000 m2 and 542,000 m2), respectively.
