A hot, dry glass bead sterilizer (Figure 9.5) is a simple, inexpensive way to quickly decontaminate microdissection instruments between procedures and animals. It kills all viruses, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, yeasts, and spores. The unique stainless steel glass bead bath (1.5-mm lead-free glass beads) remains at a constant 233°C to 260°C (over 500°F), allowing insertion of the tips of the instruments whenever decontamination is needed. Most microdissecting instruments are decontaminated within 15 seconds (see Figure 9.5; to decontaminate surgical scissors, just place the scissors into the glass bead bath or well for 15 seconds). The instrument chassis stays cool, even at the end of a full day of operation. The air above the unit is cool enough to insert an instrument into the well without discomfort. When inserting the surgical instrument into the well or bath, sterilization of the inserted parts takes only 2 to 5 seconds. The handles of the instruments do not get hot. Within 30 seconds after removal, the surgical instruments are cool enough to use. The beads will, after extensive use, eventually be worn or broken to powder, which will settle to the bottom of the well. When it becomes difficult to push the instruments in deep enough, the beads must be replaced.
Evaluation of design alternatives for sewing scissors with respect to hand performance, discomfort and usability

Scissors and shears (both are functionally equivalent, but shears have larger blades for heavier cutting) are essential tools for many workers in different occupations such as agriculture and animal husbandry (e.g., grass shears, pruning shears, blade shears, etc.), food and drugs (e.g., kitchen scissors, poultry shears), grooming (e.g., hair-cutting scissors), metal work (e.g., snips), medical (e.g., medical/surgical scissors) and sewing and clothes-making (e.g., sewing scissors, fabric shears, embroidery scissors, craft scissors). Conventional sewing scissors are straight or have only a slight curve in their handle design, which rarely places the wrist in a neutral position and thereby imposes a considerable biomechanical stress on the anatomical structures of the hand and wrist due to the high frequency of repetitive movements. The results from studies on MSDs among workers involved in different sewing tasks have also shown a relatively high prevalence of hand, wrist and shoulder complaints among these workers [7,12,13], which may partly be attributed to the use of tools such as scissors.
Chronic exposure to ampicillin alters lung microbial composition in laboratory rat

After the six months, rats were then sacrificed under sodium pentobarbital anesthesia by neck removal to minimize suffering for lung tissue collection. The lung tissues of each rat were collected into 15 ml centrifuge tubs with 5 mL phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), immediately placed in liquid nitrogen, and stored at −80 °C for future analysis. The surgical scissors were cleaned and rinsed in ethanol, PBS and flamed between each organ. PBS control specimens from surgical scissors rinsed with clean instruments were included as procedural negative controls for whole lung tissue. The PBS on the sampling bench during the whole working time and blank DNA extraction without any sample template served as negative controls.

For this procedure, merely surgical gloves, surgical scissors, surgical forceps and some saline solution are required. These materials are already present and used during the previously performed cholecystectomy. The surgical examination and the administrative procedures are performed in less than 5 min. It is usually performed following placement of the final suture and the sign-out procedure of the surgical team.
