The weekly two-and-one-half-hour sessions focused on a variety of work-related activities. Based on the therapists’ research and experience, they adapted items from the following assessments: Gesell Developmental Diagnosis (1974), Bayley Scales of Infant Development (1969), Vineland Social Maturity Scale (1965), Bruininks-Oseretsky Tests (1946), Memphis Instruments for Individual Program Planning and Evaluation (1974), and Watch Me Grow (1977).

This cross-sectional case–control study was conducted on 20 intellectually disabled children, 10 boys (50%) and 10 girls (50%). Their age ranged 9–14 years (mean age 11.4 ± 2.07 years). They were recruited from Kamayani School of Mentally Handicapped, Pune, and AbNormal Home, Kothrud, Pune, Maharashtra. The cases were compared with 20 healthy age- and gender-matched normal children (10 boys and 10 girls) serving as controls to avoid the influence of aging and gender on metabolic profiles. Their age ranged 9–14 years (mean age 10.8 ± 1.75 years). Parents of all subjects were informed of the aims and methods of the study and signed a written consent. Ethical clearance for this study was obtained from Savitribai Phule Pune University Ethics Committee. All persons with ID were subjected to thorough clinical examination under the guidance of a clinician and family and consanguinity history details were taken. Details of their prenatal and postnatal history were taken, including information on primary developmental domains, motor skills, speech and language, and social and adaptive behavior. Intelligence quotient (IQ) was assessed using the Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) in children. The subjects were not taking any type of medication or special diet which could alter the metabolite profiles.

Calculations for the post-operative outcomes were done as follows: Average duration of CI use was calculated as the time elapsed since the initial stimulation of CI to the time of the latest assessment of the language, phonological, and social ages. Satisfactory aided response was defined as aided warble tone threshold ≤39 dB HL. Language age was measured using the modified Arabic PLS4 [12] considering 8 years as the ceiling [13]. Phonological age was calculated as the sum of language age and the duration of amplification with CI divided by 2 [14]. Social age was measured using Vineland Social Maturity Scale (VSMS) (1965).
