In our hospital, the VTE prophylaxis protocol composed of the subcutaneous injection of Tinzaparin sodium, a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), in the upper arm (50 anti-Xa IU/kg body weight) at the night of the surgery and then continued for ten days excluding the day of surgery. Consequently, patients with length of stay more than ten days typically had not received LMWH until their discharge. Compressive elastic stockings had been routinely used starting from the day of surgery until patients were fully ambulant. All patients were encouraged for early ambulation starting from the second postoperative day assisted by a specialised nurse. After discharge, all patients were invited to monthly follow-up for the first 3 months and then every 3 months during the 1 year. In each visit: history, physical examination, abdominal ultrasound and laboratory investigations (serum creatinine, CBC and serum electrolytes) were performed. Lower limb Doppler ultrasound was done only when indicated, so there was no routine screening for DVT in asymptomatic patients.

The day before surgery all patients went through bowel preparation by intestinal washout containing iso-osmotic solution. The morning of the operation enema was given to all of the patients. Deep venous thrombosis prophylactic treatment with low-molecular-weight heparin (tinzaparin sodium) was administered, at a dose of 50 IU/kg/d, sc. All patients were administered 1.5 g of metronidazole per os (in three doses of 500 mg each) a day before the operation, while immediately preoperatively, the patients received 2 mg of ceftriaxone plus 500 mg of metronidazole intravenously.
