Fish Odor Syndrome/Trimethylaminuria
Published in Charles Theisler, Adjuvant Medical Care, 2023
Slightly acidic soaps and body lotions can convert trimethylamine on the skin into a less volatile form that can be removed by washing. Slightly acidic detergents may also help reduce the intensity of the odor.4
Diabetes
Published in Sally Robinson, Priorities for Health Promotion and Public Health, 2021
Prolonged and very high blood glucose is a medical emergency called diabetic ketoacidosis. Due to lack of insulin, the cells are starved of glucose, so the body breaks down its own fat, which releases acidic ketone bodies. These cause an unusual fruity breath odour. Other symptoms include dehydration, thirst, laboured breathing, rapid heartbeat, confusion, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness and coma.
Herbs in Health Management
Published in Raj K. Keservani, Anil K. Sharma, Rajesh K. Kesharwani, Nutraceuticals and Dietary Supplements, 2020
Cardamom seeds are the best mouth freshener. In India, it is a custom to eat flavored seeds after a meal. This helps to get rid of bad mouth odor as well as halitosis. Cineole present in the seed works as an antiseptic and antibacterial and thus promotes good oral health.
Identification of odor biomarkers in irradiation injury urine based on headspace SPME-GC-MS

After exposure to irradiation, metabolic abnormalities occur in multiple organs including kidney, and the quality and quantity of urine also change with radiation injury. Previous reports have indicated that urine from cancer patients can have abnormal odors, and some small molecule metabolites in urine VOCs can be used as biomarkers for diagnosing cancer (Wu and Qu 2015; Monteiro et al. 2017). C. elegans has odor tropism and can recognize complex odors, even in different concentrations (Bargmann 2006; Robertson and Thomas 2006). Through this odor tropism experiment, we found that C. elegans showed significant attraction to the urine of TBI rats compared with the urine of control rats, indicating that irradiation injury urine had ‘special odor’ and the metabolites in urine were changed. Metabolic profiles analysis is one of the most effective approaches to identify biomarkers. Recently, with GC-MS as a standardized platform for compound identification, metabolomics focused on VOCs in urine, which could be used as odor biomarkers (Zou et al. 2016; Chen et al. 2019). In this study, comparing the metabolic profiles of TBI and control rats, 63 differentially expressed metabolites were screened from urine VOCs by metabolomics based on SPME-GC-MS, and 10 of them with excellent diagnostic ability were identified as odor biomarkers of irradiation injury.
Is the vaginal cleansing product industry causing harm to women?

For the reasons outlined above, we believe that there is good reason to be concerned that the vaginal cleansing product industry is harmful to women. In particular, the industry uses marketing that promotes unattainable standards of vaginal hygiene to sell products, some of which are known to be associated with significant health risks. While one could argue that women have the ability to simply choose not to use these products, this ignores the broader societal pressures that some women experience in needing to be ‘clean’ [3]. We conducted a study to understand women’s motivations for using vaginal cleansing products using in-depth qualitative interviews [3,4]. One of the main reasons the women in our study gave was to attain vaginal cleanliness. For them, vaginal cleanliness meant an absence of vaginal odor and discharge. Other studies have been conducted that similarly show that attaining vaginal cleanliness is a commonly reported reason for why women use these products [14,28]. This is concerning, as the presence of vaginal secretions is often representative of women who are in good physiological health [29]. While it is important to recognize that some forms of vaginal odor and discharge may be indications of infections, such as bacterial vaginosis, vaginal emissions in a healthy vagina play important roles in protecting against irritation and infection. For this reason, vaginal cleansing products aimed to eliminate vaginal discharge are not only harmful but used under the wrong pretense as vaginal discharge, even fairly substantive discharge, is normal.
Colovesicular fistula from Candida dubliniensis in an immunocompetent resulting in poor outcome

Eventually, 2 weeks later, he showed significant clinical improvement in mental status and achieved hemodynamic stability. He was liberated from mechanical ventilation, tapered off from norepinephrine and downgraded to a general medical floor. While on the floor, he again became confused and complained of dysphasia with white blood cells elevated to 17,000 k/ul. Two repeat blood cultures from different sites grew Candida dubliniensis. All central venous catheters and lines were removed but did not show any growth. A repeat paracentesis was again negative for any infections and cultures had no growth. At this time, the urine had foul odor and showed fecal-matter-like discoloration. The microscopy of the UA revealed large amounts of yeast growth as well. This was attributed to a possible colovesicular fistula. He was started on micafungin but quickly became unstable for any surgical intervention and he expired 5 days later.
