Describe the mechanism of colour perception

Although perceived colour is fundamentally influenced by the wavelength of light reflected from an object, it is not determined by the wavelength of that light. Colour constancy is the phenomenon whereby the perceived colour of an object appears constant despite wide variations in the wavelength of illuminating light. The mechanism of colour constancy is poorly understood but involves higher cerebral centres and contrast with surrounding objects.

Since we did not observe optical changes, we suggest that these improvements can occur at the cortical level (even before the visual sign decussating). The detection of spatial frequencies occurs through multiple channels that lead information of bands of low, medium and high frequencies up to the primary visual cortex (V1).39 There is a certain asymmetry in the processing of spatial frequencies, since studies have pointed out that the right hemisphere area is more activated in the processing of low spatial frequencies, and the left hemisphere is more activated for the processing of high spatial frequencies.40–42 Regarding a measure of color evaluation, neurons in V1 and V4 are influenced by chromatic context, in a way consistent with color constancy.43

Webcam-based imaging is arguably the lowest quality, though there is wide variation between models in terms of pixel density, utilization of auto-focus, and color constancy. To date, studies evaluating webcams for remote examination of anterior segment structures are still needed.
