8.00: Road safety
Published in Fiona Broadley, Supporting Life Skills for Young Children with Vision Impairment and Other Disabilities, 2020
Pelicans are the most common type of controlled crossing. Draw your child’s attention to the blister (tactile) paving on the ground that indicates a crossing point. However, do be aware that that it can also be installed at other crossing points that are inappropriate for someone with a vision impairment.

The survey was conducted between December 2018 to February 2019. Majority of the data-points have sidewalks. The quality variable indicates the maintenance quality of sidewalks at the study sites while cleanliness depends on the presence or absence of litter on the sidewalk, clogged drainage system or overall tidiness of the sidewalk. Obstructions refer to the presence of any hindrance such as vendors, trees, etc., on a sidewalk that might reduce the effective width and interfere in the smooth movement of the pedestrians (Figure 3(a) & (b)). Disability friendliness indicates presence of tactile paving on bus-stop platforms for guiding visually impaired commuters and ramp or escalators for those on wheelchairs (Figure 3(c)). An authorised bus-stop indicates those with a proper board or an official government signage, whereas the unauthorised ones are special cases where passengers wait and buses halt for boarding-alighting but has no proper designation. Figure 3(d) shows such an unauthorized bus stop without any signage or shelter. A few traffic cones were placed at the edge of the pavement, marking it as a waiting zone for passengers. Bus bay refers to a separate by-lane for buses to halt for safe boarding and alighting, without blocking the mainstream traffic. After completing the survey, the data was properly coded for the ease of data analysis.
