Common and Assistive Technology to Support People with Specific Learning Disabilities to Access Healthcare

For people with sLDs commonly available apps such as Leo, which records and transcribes conversations, and Sonocent, which records and allows the user to add visual information, may be helpful when meeting with practitioners to ensure that they have effective notes of the conversation. For reading content on a webpage, ClaroSpeak, ClaroPDF or Voice Dream Reader will allow the person to use a text-to-voice function, with the ability to modify the speed and tone (voice), and highlight text as it is read. ClaroSpeak will also save the text as an audio file for later listening. Apps with an optical character recognition (OCR) feature (such as ClaroPDF, KNFB Reader or Prizmo) allow users to take a picture of the text and then read the text back to them. When determining an appropriate app to support the person with a learning disability, it is critical to focus on the function that is required, such as the need to read text easily, or a timer to remember appointments, rather than focusing on the disability.

Since the 1990s, optical character reading technology, such as the JAWS® “Job Access With Speech” program and the K-NFB reader (an acronym for Kurzweil – National Federation of the Blind Reader), has been available for computers and mobile phones and the costs are decreasing. The smart phone application Seeing AI, developed by Microsoft, is available free (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/ai/seeing-ai). In addition to reading text, this technology will identify images that the phone camera is pointed at, such as faces (the age estimate is not always correct), product bar codes, monetary notes and scenery. Faces of known individuals can be logged for future identification.
