Writing letters
Published in Rosemary Cook, Awareness and Influence in Health and Social Care, 2021
There is of course a third way: if you have an electronic template with the headed paper of your organisation (and you are authorised to use it), or your home address if appropriate, you can write a ‘proper’ letter using the template, then email the document as an attachment to the recipient. Bingo! Speed and impact. However, unless you are also using an electronic signature, the letter will be unsigned. You may need to follow it up with a signed version. It seems as if the whole world just uses email or sends texts but there are times when a formal letter is appropriate and knowing how to write such letters should not become a lost art. A formal letter can be sent as an email attachment!(Joanna Parker)
Patient Safety and Risk Management: Better Information for Physicians Means Reduced Risks (and Better Outcomes)
Published in Jan Oldenburg, Dave Chase, Kate T. Christensen, Brad Tritle, Engage!, 2020
Recently, collaborators from Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center, Geisinger Health System primary care clinics, and the Harborview Medical Center sought to improve patient care by inviting patients to read their doctors’ notes.11 The centers sampled patients receiving care in different settings: an urban academic setting, rural integrated health settings, and a county hospital respectively. Over 90,000 patients under the care of 114 primary care physicians (PCPs) were invited to review encounter notes during a year-long demonstration project. Notes were only available to the patient after the doctor had signed the note. The electronic signature triggered secure messages to patients, letting them know they could logon to the facility portal and view the note. Jan Walker, the study lead says, “On one hand, this seems groundbreaking and on the other hand, patients have a legal right to their records; so what we did was simply make it easier for patients to access those notes.”

We recruited 24 adults with mental health conditions who smoke or had quit smoking in the past 5 years. In the current study, participants were recruited through virtual information sessions administered by a research coordinator at several mental health agencies in the US. Potential participants provided contact information to the research coordinator, who set up one-on-one virtual meetings to provide more information about the study. Those interested in participating provided informed electronic consent (e-consent) before enrollment into the study. Electronic signatures were captured using the Research Electronic Data Capture e-consent framework (Aber et al., 1995). This project was approved by the ethics review boards at the Department of Mental Health in Massachusetts and the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (Reference number: H00019687_3).

An invitation to participate in the study was posted to the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers listserv. Members were invited to complete a 20-minute survey about their training practices in exchange for a 10 USD gift certificate and provided with a link to the questionnaire. Those who clicked the link were taken to an electronic survey hosted on the Opinio platform. Consent was obtained with an electronic signature. All procedures were approved by the Main-Campus Institutional Review board at University of New Mexico prior to the start of recruitment.
