A unique element of a case study isdocumented patient consent. You must obtain written consent from the patient or the patient's legally authorized representative before submitting your report. Some journals provide a consent form to use. Template consent forms are also available online and your IRB may offer standardized forms to use. To protect patient confidentiality, the signed form is not submitted to the journal. However, you must acknowledge that you have a signed consent form and store the form in a secure location in the event you are asked for it.

The case study presented has a few limitations. First, a single architecture is considered highlighting issues that might not be observed with other similar 3D approaches. Second, only a limited range of possible scenarios were considered in the qualitative evaluation of this case study. Potential scenarios such as anatomical changes from surgical procedures (i.e. pulmonary lobectomy) could have significant impact on the accuracy of auto-segmentations. Lastly, the analysis presented is limited as it only uses the 2017 AAPM Thoracic Auto-segmentation Challenge data for the case study. Expanding this analysis to other publicly available datasets could confirm the shortcomings observed in this study.

As the focus of this study was to understand ethical decision-making within the contexts in which researchers reside, a case study method provided an ideal means of exploring themes and their interactions. Crowe et al. (2011) explain: “the case study approach is particularly useful to employ when there is a need to obtain an in-depth appreciation of an issue, event or phenomenon of interest, in its natural real-life context”. As researchers’ decision-making is multifaceted and their context multi-layered, an in-depth case study provided an ideal means of disentangling these relevant factors and enabling a reflection on their interactions, impact and influences. The political, socioeconomic and religio-cultural context within which researchers make ethical decisions needed to be understood, and a case-study approach allowed an exploration of these themes.

Medical research, including forensic psychiatry, has a long tradition of publishing patient cases that have not been previously described in the literature (Budgell, 2008). These are commonly referred to as a case study or clinical case report. Despite controversies such as rigor, generalizability, and researcher bias, case studies are increasingly being applied in qualitative social science and public health research (Gaikwad, 2018; Miles, 2015). According to Sturman (1997, p. 61) “[a] case study is a general term for the exploration of an individual, group or phenomenon”. Simons (2009, p. 21) more specifically defines a case study as “an in-depth exploration from multiple perspectives of the complexity and uniqueness of a particular project, policy, institution, program or system in a ‘real life’.”
The influence of disclosure of an autism diagnosis on peer engagement and interactions for a child with autism in summer camps: a case study

This study used a case study approach to describe engagement states of a child with autism who participated in both disclosure and non-disclosure conditions at summer camp. Case study allows generation of an in-depth examination of complex issues that occur in real-life contexts [35]. This case study provides an empirical inquiry that addresses the how, what, and the why of the issue of interest with all steps of data collection planned in advance and incorporating multiple sources of quantitative and qualitative data [36]. More specifically, quantitative data, gathered through structured behavioral observation of both the child with autism and peers in mainstream summer camp programs, helped describe what influence disclosure may have on peer engagement and reciprocal interactions. Qualitative data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with camp leaders, the child with autism, and peers to explore how and why (or why not) disclosure may have influenced those outcomes.
Evaluating the Reliability of the Needs in Recovery Assessment (NiRA) with Simulated Patients

SP cases were validated by two senior psychiatrists in a process that involved reviewing each case and addressing three statements, designed to evaluate different aspects of validity: 1) the story line appears to be valid (i.e. it makes sense as a whole); 2) the needs/current concerns of the SP are realistic and are congruent with their story line and; 3) the case study is representative of the case types that are seen in ‘real-world’ practice. Expert reviewers agreed with these statements for each of the four cases, and provided minor suggestions for improvement that were incorporated into final versions. All cases were informed by current literature(Davies et al., 2020) and developed using a template designed to facilitate actors to accurately and consistently perform the role of a complex SP (see supplemental files, SDC 5-8, SP case details).
