In the last few years, there have been important achievements concerning the role of centrin (Le Guennec et al. 2020; Laporte et al. 2022). These results and the focus on the SFI1/centrin complex have allowed researchers to reconsider the role of centrin in centrosome duplication and stability and in ciliogenesis regulation. In humans, more studies are needed to understand the relationship between proteins interacting with centrin and the different centrin isoforms – for example, centrin 1 is only expressed in the testis, while centrin 2 and centrin 3 seem to be involved in centriole function. Answering these questions would help to better understand all of the functions of these proteins, whose expression is not restricted to the centrosome and centrioles. For example, the role of centrin 1 in photoreception and DNA repair is an emerging issue (Giessl et al. 2004; Grecu and Assairi 2014).
