Tabasheer or Banslochan mainly obtained from bamboo internodes consists of pure silica and is a part of the pharmacology of traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine in the Indian subcontinent (Rawat et al. 2018). It acts as stimulant, astringent, febrifuge, tonic with anti-spasmodic and aphrodisiac properties and is the main ingredient in Sitopaladi ayurveda medicine (Chongtham and Bisht 2017). Menghao et al. (2012) investigated the effect of silica extract of Phyllostachys edulis on bone loss in ovariectomized rats and observed that Si supplementation increased significantly the femoral and lumbar bone mass density. Si content is highest in D. hamiltonii (190mg/100g d.w.) followed by D. hookeri and D. latiflorus (170mg/100g d.w.) as indicated in Table 3.2. Minimum content was detected in P. mannii (70mg/100g d.w.). Thus, bamboo shoot is a Si rich vegetable that has significant prospects for dietary supplementation (Rawat et al. 2018). Moreover, the abundance of Si in bamboo shoot offers the opportunities to be used in the nutraceutical and cosmetics industry.

A Chinese group was able to formulate a product for treatment of globus hystericus, the feeling of a lump in the throat as a symptom of anxiety or hysteria, composed of sandalwood, cardamoms, albizzia flower, Tribulus terrestris, common cnidium fruits, aloe, tabasheer, amomum tsao-ko, C. sativus, Cudrania cochinchinensis, Cynanchum glaucescens, and peruvian groundcherry herbs. In this product administrated per os., C. sativus has beneficial effects on the blood circulation, mood, and depression. Clinical experiments showed an efficacy up to 86.4% in treating globus hystericus with no adverse reaction [110]. In addition, other products have thus far been patented against depression [111] and cerebral arteriosclerosis [112] (Table 2).
