Thermography by Specialty

The effect of acupuncture on sympathetic vasoconstrictive tone has been studied using quantitative thermography as the measurement device. In 1985, researchers using a calibrated thermal scanner under controlled conditions studied the sympatholytic effect of manually or electrically stimulating the hand acupuncture point, Hoku (L.I. 4).204 Only the left hand was given acupuncture, but a resultant temperature increase occurred equally in both hands and both feet. No local reaction was seen at the needling site. Manual stimulation proved more effective than electrical. The face showed the most consistent warming of 1.5°C (2.7°F) above that of the control group. The next most consistent warming appeared in the hands, while the feet showed the least reaction. The authors concluded that the Hoku acupuncture sympatholytic effect was a cranio-caudal phenomenon under central nervous system control, not a peripheral effect.205

Television capture of the image glow shows that the emission centers repeatedly appear from the same points on the skin for each individual person. The outburst current may result from the transport of electrons within structural complexes of skin or other tissue, which suggests the possible connection to acupuncture points and the meridian system. Useful clinical information is obtained with the EPI, assigning sectors around each fingertip to organ and functional subsystems, based originally on Su Jok, a school of Korean hand acupuncture. Sector assignments have been modified through clinical experience, first by Peter Mandel's empirical qualitative observations in Germany and refined further by mathematical analysis using the EPI/GDV in clinical observations during developmental research in Russia.

Acupuncture and moxibustion are important components of TCM, which is based on an integral view. The integrity of acupuncture refers to certain acupuncture points of the body, which can influence the functions of multiple organs and play multifaceted, multilinked, multilevel, and multiway regulation roles in the functions of various systems and organs of the body. For example, local stimulations of microneedles, such as auricular acupuncture, scalp acupuncture, hand acupuncture, foot acupuncture, nose acupuncture, tongue acupuncture, and eye acupuncture, can excite channel qi, thereby generating overall regulatory functions of the body and curing various systemic diseases.

In the TCM theory, the heat accumulation in Fei (Lung) and Wei (Stomach), blood stasis, dampness and emotional disorder are etiologic and pathogenic factors for acne (45). Fire needle therapy can achieve the functions of both acupuncture and moxibustion (46). On the one hand, acupuncture stimulation can enhance qi and blood circulation to stimulate healthy qi generation. Abundant healthy qi exerts a critical function in eliminating the harmful conditions of AV. On the other hand, the warm stimulation of moxibustion plays the roles of drawing out poison and purging heat, thus achieving the purposes of Qingre Qushi and Quxie Jiedu (47). According to basic experimental studies, fire needle therapy can enhance the repair ability of local skin lesions, and its mechanism may be related to enhancing the function of phagocytes. Moreover, it can also accelerate the healing of damaged wounds by stimulating the release of various growth factors such as VEGF in the body (48,49). Therefore, fire needle adjuvant chemical peels therapy is an advisable treatment option.

On the other hand, acupuncture was also perceived to increase patients’ ability to verbal and non-verbal communication. Participants perceived that patients’ ability to concentrate and listen increased with acupuncture. Patients receiving acupuncture calmed down easier and gained better control of impulses when they got upset, having fewer disturbing thoughts, and were prepared to talk calmly with fewer misunderstandings. Agitated and anxious patients communicated and co-operated better, and counseling became more effective as patients became more reflective and flexible and could focus better on the exercises. Sometimes ear acupuncture was used during counseling, to help patients focus and stay calm.
