Alternative medicine for endometriosis: Diet and nutrition
Published in Seema Chopra, Endometriosis, 2020
Vitamin C can be easily incorporated in the diet by simply squeezing some lemon juice on daily vegetables and pulses as well as on salads and in soups. Incorporate fruits in a daily diet. Citrus fruits provide approximately 50 mg of vitamin C/100 g. Other fruits like guava also provide a good amount of vitamin C. Uncooked greens like broccoli and leafy vegetables provide approximately 100 mg/100 g. Indian gooseberry (amla) alone provides approximately 600 mg/100 g (Figure 14.4) [14].

Psidium guajava L., commonly known as guava, is an evergreen tree native to South America, including Brazil. In a study of González-Aguilar et al. (2004), the application of MeJa to mature green guava fruits stored at 5°C for 10 days reduced deterioration and the development of chilling injury symptoms. MeJa treatment resulted in an increased activity of LOX and phenylalanine-ammonia lyase, enzymes, which have an important role in the activation of mechanisms against different stresses, including the biosynthesis of defense secondary metabolites.
Approach to the Overweight and Obese Patient

Colas: A can of cola or soda has 150 calories; a big drink has more than 600! Have plain water or mineral water with a slice of lemon or lime. Have fruit instead of fruit juices or flavor water with juice to reduce calories, but recognize that some fruit juices can provide phytonutrients (tomato, pomegranate, and orange juices), in addition to vitamins, minerals, and water. Fruit juices are often only partially made with fruit juice. Some guava juices are only 15% juice, but have high-fructose corn syrup added for sweetness so that they provide 150 calories in 8 ounces. Using 100% fruit juices is a way to avoid this issue.

Psidium guajava L. (Family, Myrtaceae) often known as guava, is utilized in ethnomedicine to treat ulcer, diarrhoea, and stomach pain (Hassimotto et al. 2005, Naseer et al. 2018). PGLE is also used to treat inflammations, gastroenteritis, and hypertension (Naseer et al. 2018). Scientific studies have associated PGLE with antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, antioxidant effects, and anti-diabetic properties (Bipul et al. 2013, Díaz-de-Cerio et al. 2017). In coastal areas of Nigeria, the plant is specifically used in the treatments of diarrhoea, pain, and fever (Unaeze et al. 2017). Orieke et al. (2020) reported that the leaf extract of Corchorus olitorius elicits anti-diarrhoeal, anti-inflammatory, and tocolytic activities in laboratory animals. Since the evaluation of the gastro-protective and anti-motility effects of substances on the GIT (in vitro and in vivo) may help to explain their possible anti-ulcer and anti-diarrhoeal potentials, this study was designed to evaluate the effect PGLE on gastrointestinal functions with respect to some ulcer and diarrhoea parameters.

Acca sellowiana O. Berg. syn. Feijoa sellowiana O. Berg. belongs to the Myrtaceae family. It is commonly known as pineapple guava or guavasteen due to its fruit’s characteristic aroma and close resemblance to guava, Psidium guajava L. of the same family1,2. The plant is native to South America but has been introduced to different climatic regions including the Mediterranean1. It is cultivated for its edible aromatic fruit and also, as ornamental trees. The introduction of Feijoa in different climates resulted in the availability of many varieties of the plant with different genotypes and chemical compositions2.

The guava leaves extraction efficiency was 12.82 ± 0.91%, and the extract possessed a dark-green color with a moisture content of 6.38 ± 0.04%, which was appropriate for further experiments. The total phenolic content in the GEE was 312.6 ± 0.14 mg GAE/g DPW. Our result was higher than that of the previous studies, which showed that the total phenolic content in the guava leaves were 53.04 ± 14.85 mg GAE/g fresh weight (Iamjud et al., 2014) and ∼110 mg GAE/g DPW (Seo et al., 2014). This could be due to the differences of the guava leaves from different region, soil and environmental conditions, and cultivation time, which result in different bioactive compounds contents.
