Fish meat is classified as white meat which also includes poultry meat. Fish and poultry meats are called white meats because they contain lower myoglobin and heme iron levels than red meats from mammals. Fish meat is an important source of energy, high-quality proteins, good fats, vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals (13, 17, 28–32). It is the main food source for populations living near ocean, sea, lake, or river. In several African and Asian countries, fish provide more than half of the animal protein supply and are a food staple (28). Fish meat has been recently discovered to prevent some chronic ailments, in particular cardiovascular diseases. Studies have reported the absence of CVDs among Inuit in Greenland and the Arctic region, who eat most fatty fish and shellfish daily (31–32).

Unfamiliar food and especially lack of knowledge about its ingredients could cause confusion to most elderly patient and, if uncertain about its ingredients, they may refuse to touch hospital food. Sea food and in particular fish meat is one product exempt from religious restrictions and consumed by nearly all religious groups, the exception being the strict vegetarians. A few sects avoid fish without scales and crayfish. Dairy products, pulses, rice, vegetables and chapattis made of wheat flour are the main components of diet for all areas.

Severely diseased animals had difficulty with standing and were lying down, still the appetite could be quite good. In the carcasses of dead calves were found degeneration of body and heart muscles. In the same district, as early as 1890, veterinarians reported cases where apparently normal calves slaughtered at the abbatoirs had white-to-yellow degenerated muscles34 (or lamb stiffness35). Meat inspectors called the findings “fish meat,” while it clinically is called “Rheumatisme,” now white muscle disease (WMD). Lambs were found with nearly the same symptoms and postmortem picture. The disease was most frequent in areas where the mother animals were kept inside the barn over very long parts of the year and home-produced fodder dominated the ration.

In the present article, we discussed cytotoxic and antitumor activities of several food items including plants and animal products recommended by TPM as anticancer agents. Most of the studied food items have been shown to exhibit anticancer properties. Among them, evidence supporting the anticancer effects of beetroot (B. vulgris) and its major compound betanin, cinnamon, and cinnamaldehyde, barley (H. vulgare) and its products, extra-virgin olive oil, black pepper (P. nigrum) and its piperine, grapes (V. vinifera) and its compound resveratrol, ginger and its compound 6-gingerol, whey protein, fish, and honey are stronger. Most of these agents have shown modulatory activities on various molecular signal transduction pathways that result in cancer cell apoptosis induction or inhibition of cancer cell proliferation. Notably, epidemiological studies support the antitumor effects of a number of studied food items including EVOO and fish meat. Importantly, unlike routine chemotherapy agents, the inclusion of these items to the healthy people and cancer patients diet produces no or minimum harm or adverse effects. However, additional pharmacological studies and clinical trials must be conducted to elucidate their molecular and cellular mechanisms of actions, frequency, and amount of consumption, possible adverse effects, and optimum preparation methods.

Numerous studies investigating the effect of various dietary nutrients on PCa have suggested that selenium (Se) is probably the most promising [40,47,48]. Dietary sources of selenium include fish, meat, eggs, and cereals (whole grains). The major determinant factor in the plasma concentration of Se is the dietary intake, and there is large variation in the selenium content of the same food depending on the geographic regions [49,50]. Marine foods are integral to the Mediterranean eating pattern. Simopoulos [51] reports that the traditional Cretan MeDi of the 1960 s was high in selenium from fish and seafood (particularly octopus) which are likely to protect against PCa.

After 2–3 weeks, tumors were formed in the rabbit legs. After anesthesia, skin preparation, and sterilization, the rabbits were positioned on an operating table. After routine disinfection and toweling, the skin and fascia were cut, while the muscle fibers were bluntly separated to expose the tumor. The fish-meat-like tumor tissues were excised; the necrotic tissue and part of the fibrous connective tissue were removed; and the tumor was placed in a culture dish containing penicillin and saline in a 1:40 ratio. The tumor tissues were repeatedly sheared into 1 mm3 tissue blocks by using a pair of ophthalmic surgical scissors.
