Welding procedure specification

A welding procedure specification (WPS) is a document that outlines all essential and nonessential variables, as well as supplementary essential variables when required, for each welding process used. It is designed to characterize the arc welding process with welding current, voltage, and welding speed for each thickness. The way the weld is fabricated, i.e., process used, welding conditions (current, voltage, travel speed, preheat and interpass temperatures, polarity), number of runs to fill the joint, and sequence of runs, constitutes the welding procedure specification (WPS). The WPS is an extremely important concept because it serves as a specification for the whole joint and is a means of communicating the fabrication process.

For each thickness, a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is designed to characterise the arc welding process with the welding current, voltage, and welding speed. For 6 mm thickness, three passes of welding are used and the sequences of welding are shown in Figure 3.
