Which way to turn?
Published in Jonathan Chapman, Routledge Handbook of Sustainable Product Design, 2017
Appropriate care and maintenance is important, as the performance of products may otherwise deteriorate and their lifetimes be shortened. In the case of washing machines, for example, a regular high temperature ‘maintenance wash’ to remove bacteria, soap scum and mould growth is recommended by manufacturers. Failure to maintain vacuum cleaners properly can cause failure, as poor suction may signal a blockage and cause the engine to overheat. Furniture may require periodic polishing in order to provide resistance to water or stain damage, while carpets and other floor surfacing should be cleaned regularly to prevent long term damage. Clothing needs to be washed at the right temperature to avoid shrinkage. More generally, stain damage needs to be dealt with appropriately, lubricants applied to moving parts, and so forth.
Underground mining/stoping methods & mine closure
Published in Ratan Raj Tatiya, Surface and Underground Excavations, 2013
Care and maintenance - The period following temporary cessation of operations when infrastructure remains largely intact and the site continues to be managed. Closure Planning - A process that extends over the mine life cycle and that typically culminates in tenement relinquishment. It includes decommissioning and rehabilitation. The term closure alone is sometimes used to indicate the point at which operations cease, infrastructure is removed and management of the site is largely limited to monitoring.
Making Mercury’s Histories: Mercury in Gold Mining’s Past and Present
Published in Ambix, 2023
Despite mercury’s role as an extractive technology used in gold mining throughout the gold rush era, its presence remains scant and rudimentary at most contemporary gold mining heritage sites. Explanations of the consequence of mercury’s introduction into the environment or the long-term harm it is causing the region’s biota and local human population are non-existent. This first became apparent to me during a field visit to West Coast gold mining sites in 2009, undertaken to develop a closer understanding of how the mythology of gold was being generated and maintained in different parts of the world. These field observations led to a closer interest in the presentation strategies followed at gold mining heritage sites and eventually my development of the term contrived dereliction to describe an approach to mining heritage site management and display where an outward appearance of abandonment and decay is achieved through an ongoing programme of care and maintenance.27
