Lubricating Bearings and Other Machine Elements

Springs are used to store energy, restore components to their former position, absorb shocks, distribute, limit or measure power, maintain powerlocking connections, and function as a vibration suppression element. Coil springs and, especially, annular plate springs or Belleville washers (Figures 11-56), have to meet certain requirements in terms of material and shape. Their performance can be improved by applying special lubricants and/or tribosystem coatings.

The nanocomposite coating possesses distinctive physical and mechanical properties and has a minimum of two phases, an amorphous phase and a nanocrystalline phase. The use of protective nanocomposite coating in dry machining and energy-efficient engines plays a substantial role in minimizing friction and new developments. The purpose of protective coatings is to reduce wear by increasing hardness and prevent severe deformation. The performance of a tribosystem can be improved by reducing the shear forces between two sliding surfaces. Low coefficients of friction and high hardness are key parameters to reduce wear of coatings. For application under extreme conditions, the high hardness, toughness, thermal stability, and interface toughness are crucial parameters for protective coatings. The enhanced hardness is due to the absence of dislocations within the nanocrystalline phase (12). Nano composite materials display excellent tribological and mechanical properties, due to the absence of dislocations and grain boundary the nano crystalline appear to have brittle behaviour which means the fracture strength (hardness) is proportional to the elastic limit of the material. (13). Nanocomposite coatings largely meet requirements and can be utilized in numerous applications, such as cutting tools, dies, molds, and other wear resistance applications. On the other hand, for the manufacturing process, hardness should be accompanied by high toughness. As a result, it is essential to control the coating structure with high toughness.
