Testers and Tools
Published in Laurence J. Street, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Technology, 2023
“Wrenches” includes everything from small open-end spanners to adjustable “Crescent” wrenches to metric and standard socket sets of every size (Figure 10.33). Some applications specify that fasteners be tightened to particular torque values, and this requires an accurate torque wrench handle.
Hand and power tools
Published in Andrew Livesey, Alan Robinson, The Repair of Vehicle Bodies, 2018
A complete collection of spanners or wrenches is indispensable for the body repair worker. A variety of vehicle body parts, accessories and related parts all utilize common bolt and nut fasteners as well as a range of special fasteners. The word ‘wrench’ means ‘twist’. A wrench is a tool for twisting or holding bolt heads and nuts. The width of the jaw opening determines the size of the spanner, so that it fits around a nut and a bolt head of equal size. The larger the spanner size, the longer the spanner: the extra length provides the user with more leverage to turn the larger nut or bolt. Spanners are drop forged and made from chrome-vanadium steels.

The track panel is consisting of six prestressed concrete B70 type sleepers with a 60 cm distance from the center of sleepers, two pieces of 5 m UIC60 rails, and the Vossloh W14 fastening system, and a hard type rubber rail-pad for the Vossloh fastening system (Figure 1(a,d)). The track panel is located on the base ballast layer after assembling all track components. The track panel is aligned on the ballast layer similar to how installed loadcells on the rail head are precisely located in front of the loading jacks mounted on the loading frame columns (Figure 1(c)). Then, the cribs and shoulders are filled and compacted with ballast in two stages. The torque force is imposed on fasteners by the torque wrench at a specific amount.

The participants were assigned the task of installing a lever on one of four pipes of the workspace model, as in a previous experiment [15]. However, in this experiment, the positions and orientations of washers, a nut, the lever, and the socket wrench differed from those used in our prior work. An outline of the lever installation procedure is given as follows. Pick up a white washer using the right hand and attach it to the rotation shaft on the pipe.Grip the lever using the left hand.Attach the lever to the rotation shaft.Pick up a spring washer using the right hand and attach it to the rotation shaft.Pick up a nut using the right hand, attach it to the rotation shaft, and rotate it as much as possible.Using a socket wrench with the right hand, check the rotation direction of the socket wrench.Tighten the nut using the wrench.Grip the pipe attached to the lever using the left hand.Turn the lever 90° clockwise using the right hand.
