Each deterioration process in overhead lines is associated with different symptoms which need to be identified for assessing the condition. Among various symptoms, generation of partial discharge (PD) is identified as a sensitive and effective factor for determining overhead line defects. Discharges can be categorised into different groups depending on the mechanism of discharge generation such as transmission line corona, gap discharge, and contamination discharge. High frequency PDs generate radio noise into ultra-high frequency range and audible noise into ultra-sonic regions (Aggarwal et al., 2000). A wide range of condition assessment techniques are implemented for overhead lines such as aerial inspection, infrared inspection, PD detectors, ultrasonic detection, radio noise detection, audible noise meters, and many more.
