Soft TQM practices and employee outcomes: A mediational analysis

Although total quality management (TQM) became popular several decades ago and was once considered a management fad, it is still considered significant in both research and practice due to its potential to promote service quality and organizational performance. More importantly, the principles it brings to management, such as customer focus and continuous improvement, are still valid and eagerly sought after in most organizations. Thus, contemporary researchers have actively been conducting studies on the effectiveness of TQM or other quality initiatives across a wide variety of contexts. Furthermore, these initiatives are also studied in relation to other organizational development initiatives, such as knowledge management (e.g., Ooi 2015), cultural change (e.g., Ingelsson, Eriksson, and Lilja 2012), and corporate social responsibility (e.g., Moratis 2017).

Figure 1 presents the annual output in the field of RL compared to the total number of publications in the category ‘Management’ that comprises 241,617 publications. The data indicates an increasing trend on the subject which illustrates a growing interest of researchers, particularly since 2000. However, the graph shows less consistent figures since 2014. This result may indicate what Ponzi and Koenig (2002) call a management fad, a tendency for a business concept to become popular then to drop back to very modest usage – e.g. the academic and industry communities observed such phenomena in Quality Circles, Total Quality Management, and Business Process Reengineering. As will be discussed later, RL may be in the process of being supplanted by more recent and broader concepts such as GSCM and SSCM.
