Pulse Width Modulation and Inverter

In order to construct a current controller in the reference frame, the measured current vector should be mapped into the reference frame. Therefore, the rotor angular position and phase currents need to be measured. For position sensing, the absolute encoder or resolver is utilized. Since absolute encoders are normally expensive, resolvers are popularly utilized for PMSMs. However, an incremental encoder can be used with some starting methods. For current sensing, Hall effect sensors are widely used.

The advantages of total power management scheme are that it contains one voltage sensor and one current sensor. Existing techniques for current sensing include a current transformer or sensing a resistor in series with the power device. The first method is expensive and has cross coupling and electromagnetic interference problems, while the second method is having large conduction loss. Since OCC is a nonlinear technique, it senses only the inductor current and integrates the average currents through each source. Since OCC controls the average current through the source, filters are not needed which increases the stability of the system and the size is also reduced. Thus, it results in the overall system improvement.
