Among ants in an ant colony, there are certain ants that carry out specialized work, i.e., they are capable of adapting their behaviour in accordance to the circumstances. The combination of specialization and flexibility tends to be very appealing for multi-agent optimization and control, specifically in tasks related to resource allocation, which require continuous adaptation to environmental changes. Based on this behavioural concept Robinson (1992) proposed a threshold model where workers with a low response threshold respond to a low stimuli level in comparison to workers with a high response threshold. In the proposed model, stimuli is replaced with a stigmergic variable.

Using opinion dynamics models to predict behaviours of groups of individuals is a key problem in social psychology (Friedkin, 2010). The problem is to link the evolution of the individuals’ opinion to their inclination about undertaking a certain action. In this respect, the simplest approach assumes the existence of a threshold, so that the individual becomes ‘active’ whenever its opinion exceeds the threshold. This leads to the formulation of a so-called threshold model.
