Social simulation refers to the use of computer-based models to either challenge or replicate social theories and human interactions. It often involves agent-based modeling, which allows for the programming of diverse agents in a social context, local interactions, and autonomous decision-making. The aim of social simulation can be to question social theory (simulation of models) or to reproduce human interactions (Manzo, 2007; Sanders, 2007; Phan and Varenne, 2010). Our work is directed towards the latter: we define a set of constraints which help to imitate certain aspects of human performance. In this case simulation is a decision-making aid, the purpose of which is to anticipate human behaviour. The simulation platform becomes the equivalent of a virtual laboratory (Phan and Amblard, 2007; Sanders, 2007) and the decision is developed by varying the exogenous (the price, for example) and endogenous factors relating to human activity in a domestic setting (family make-up, individual preferences, characteristics of the habitat, etc.).

The ‘Keep It Descriptive, Stupid’ principle described in [33] argues for the simulation of richer, more realistic models. This principle aligns with the increased complexity of agents that is expected in this approach. Adam and Gaudou [33] argue that the social simulation community needs to adopt BDI style models, tools and programming languages.
