Innovative Graphics – Enabling Change by Thinking Science
Published in Tarun Grover, Mugdha Thareja, Science in Design, 2020
Collecting the inputs from the user research leads to the next important stage of design thinking, i.e., defining a problem statement. A problem statement means a concise description of a challenge or a problem to be addressed or a situation to be improved upon. Defining a problem statement allows recognition of the gap between the desired state and the current state of a design process or a product. Focusing on the facts, the problem statement should be designed to capture human-centered terms rather than to focus solely on business goals. A problem statement defined on the basis of empathy proves beneficial for building real relationships with the customers and enhancing their experience with the business products. One such strategy is illustrated as follows.

A problem statement is a succinct, straightforward explanation of the problem that must be solved. A strong issue statement responds to the following questions: What do people notice that makes them believe there is a problem? Who are the people who are specifically affected by the problem? Is there someone else who has been impacted? How often does it happen? What is the problem’s impact? What is the severity of the problem? The most important move in the decision-making process is to create an issue statement. It is pointless to continue without a simple statement of the issue or the decision to be taken. Obviously, the decision would not fix the problem if the problem is specified incorrectly.
Getting started with supply chain analytics

A problem statement is a very effective way of precisely defining and describing any problem. Importantly, problem statements bring clarity, uniformity of understanding and focus to all personnel associated with the problem. This is especially relevant for the problem solvers, i.e. those people assigned to solve the problem.
