Adding Rigor to Advance Design Thinking

In all design contexts, the iterative production of prototypes provides a way to reframe the problems and to gain an opportunity for learning and progression.Von Thienen et al. (2019) describe rapid prototyping as a means of deriving tangible results that satisfy unmet human needs. In alignment with the User Centered Design (UCD) philosophy, the design thinking approach emphasizes continual iteration of these prototyped concepts for all personas in the problem space. Prototypes help to illustrate the concept and check some assumptions. The approach requires an ongoing willingness to revisit the problem or design goal, to recast it or challenge the assumptions underlying any framing of the problem.
What design education tells us about design theory: a pedagogical genealogy

The second insight is to highlight the importance of philosophy in both design theory and pedagogy. Virtually every programme explicitly referenced the philosophical traditions on which it was drawing, and many schools’ vision statements can be described as philosophical in nature. Dewey, in particular, comes up almost everywhere, but references to Heidegger, Marx, and feminist philosophy abound not only in mission statements but on course syllabi; students and faculty alike are reading them. That is, a philosophical attitude is pushed down onto the students; students are expected to think deeply about problematic situations, real needs vs. false pleasures, when and how to select methods, and how and what to present of their design activities and outcomes. The central role of philosophy throughout design theory and education suggests something about the nature of the discipline itself is resistant to formalization, and hence design benefits from a certain thoughtfulness – the rigorous thoughtfulness that we associate with philosophy – as part and parcel of the profession.
