Pictorial sketches can be in oblique projection or in isometric projection. Figure 5.27 shows you how to make a sketch in oblique projection. Sketch ‘boxes’ to contain the outline of the finished drawing.Lightly sketch in the details of the component or assembly being drawn.Go over the outline more heavily to make it stand out.Remove any construction lines that may cause confusion.Add dimensions as required.

Figure 4.9 shows a shaped block drawn three times in oblique projection but at different angles. All drawings show the front face of the block drawn in the plane of the paper and the side and top faces receding at 30°, 45° and 60° respectively. An oblique line is one which is neither vertical nor horizontal, and the receding lines in oblique projection can be at any angle other than 0° or 90° as long as they remain parallel in any one drawing. In practice, for manual drafting it is usual to keep to the set square angles and, of the three to choose from, 45° is the most widely used.

The most obvious way of improving Figure 1.58 is to attempt to draw the component in perspective (i.e. in a 3D view). The easiest way of doing this is to use a simple pictorial technique called oblique drawing. Figure 1.59 shows a simple oblique drawing using both cavalier oblique and cabinet oblique projection.
