To describe the dynamic behavior of the traffic flow in a given freeway section of the road, we developed a multi-regime second-order macroscopic traffic flow model, based on the macroscopic model described by Wang and Papageorgiou in (Wang and Papageorgiou 2003, 2005). In this model, the freeway is divided into a number of sections, with the length of section i denoted. The time discretization is based on a model time step, denoted T. The aggregated traffic parameters evolve according to the following equations [4] (Wang and Papageorgiou 2005):
