Review of Fundamentals Related to DC Power Supply Design and Linear Regulators
Published in Nihal Kularatna, DC Power Supplies Power Management and Surge Protection for Power Electronic Systems, 2018
This is the change in output voltage for a specified change in input voltage. Usually specified in %/V or μV/V of input change, line regulation is a measure of the reference’s ability to handle variations in supply voltage.

A regulated dc power supply with good dynamic response, low voltage ripple, good load regulation and good line regulation is required for SSPA. Synchronous buck converter topology [7] is selected. Here a freewheeling diode is replaced with MOSFET to improve the efficiency. A dead time circuit is used to avoid shoot through [8] during operation. The developed prototype has two modules in parallel. Block diagram of this power supply is shown in Figure 1 [1]. Full scale power supply will require four modules with each module having a current rating of 80 A to achieve required current rating. Modular design improves the reliability and redundancy of the system [9].

Table 2 summarises the performance comparison between the proposed converter with previous works. If the step-down ratio is taken into account, a Figure of Merit (FOM) is defined as the product of the step-down ratio and the efficiency. Notably, the converter of Ozanoglu and Dundar (2020) exhibited the highest peak efficiency and best FOM only based on simulation results presented. However, our design attains the best line regulation, peak efficiency, & FOM and the second best of load regulation and output current among all works with physical measurement results.
