The formal language is mathematics, although the tools used to create designs expressed in a formal language hide some, if not all, of the mathematics from the user.
Development of symbolic mathematics language literacy perception scale for junior high school students and analysis of literacy perceptions based on certain variables*

In order to investigate whether the use of symbols is significant in mathematics, the significance of symbols in mathematics education was analyzed as an independent variable and it was determined that using symbols was important for the students. Furthermore, statistically significant differences were found between significance assigned to the symbols by the students. In addition, it was found that this independent variable significantly predicted the symbolic mathematical language literacy perception in the multilinear regression analysis. A review of the [40] mathematics curriculum would demonstrate that the communication skills are among the basic skills that the students should acquire. It was stated that the use of the unique language of mathematics using the communication element, clear use of the terms, terminology, signs and symbols in verbal and written expressions were important [40]. Furthermore, Orton and Frobisher [41] emphasized the significance of mathematical terms and symbols in students’ mathematics textbooks and other printed material and reported that students should be able to read and understand these terms and symbols.
