The synchronous motor may be used as a constant-speed drive, particularly for ratings exceeding 15 kW, for example, motor-generator sets for a DC power system, compressors, fans, and blowers. Large synchronous motors have higher efficiencies and can operate at unity power factor; hence, they are smaller in size and weight than induction motors of the same rating. Synchronous motors can also be used for power-factor correction in an industrial plant consisting of a large number of induction motors. An overexcited synchronous motor without mechanical load behaves as a variable capacitor that can be used for reactive power control in a large power system. For the latter application, the machine is often referred to as a synchronous capacitor or a compensator.

A synchronous motor run in exact synchronous with the line frequency, whereas an induction motor requires “slip” between the line frequency and motor speed. The rotor must rotate slightly slower than the AC current alterations. Timing motors utilize the advantages of the accuracy of the synchronous motors in timers in appliances and precision servomechanisms where the motor must operate at a precise speed. The speed accuracy is dictated by the accuracy of the line frequency.

BLDC motors and PMSMs are similarly structured where both have permanent magnets in the rotor and are defined as synchronous motors. In a synchronous motor, the rotor is synchronised with the stator magnetic field i.e. the rotor turns at the same speed as the stator magnetic field.
