A pulsed EPR experiment measures the response of the electron spins after a sequence of one or more pulses of microwaves. Some of the more commonly used experiments are briefly described here. Details can be found in Schweiger and Jeschke (2001). The simplest pulsed EPR experiment is FT-EPR, which is the analog of FT-NMR (Bowman, 1990). A single pulse is applied and the ensuing free induction decay is recorded. Fourier transformation gives the corresponding frequency-domain spectrum. As discussed later, the largest microwave magnetic field, B1, that is available on most spectrometers can excite spins over only a few gauss, which defines the widest signal that can be characterized in a single FT-EPR experiment.

Pulsed EPR was performed on a Bruker Elexsys E580 pulse EPR spectrometer equipped with a Bruker split-ring resonator ER4118X- MS3 (microwave frequency = 9.55 GHz) and an Oxford CF935 cryostat. The measurements were performed at 20 K. The sample was photoexcited with the second harmonic of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser (532 nm) with an average power of 5 mW and a repetition rate of 10 Hz.
