Breakthrough 'Ergonomically Designed Doesn't Always Mean Ergonomically Used'
Published in Philip D. Bust, Contemporary Ergonomics 2007, 2018
The adjustment problems for the PCW are more complicated due to more components and features than for a car (Povlotsky, 2001). The assortment of advanced adjustable components and accessories for PCW are unlimited. But it doesn’t solve the complexity of adjustments, just the opposite, it makes it even tougher. For example, one of the best adjustable-three sizes of the HermanMiller Aeron® office chair is its nine adjustable features, including seat height, Kinemat® tilt tension, arm height/angle, PostureFit™ adjustment, lumbar depth/height, and forward tilt with tilt limiter.
Office Chair Backrest Height Affects Physiological Responses to Sitting

This investigation has demonstrated that office chair backrest height influences posture and muscle activity responses and therefore should be a consideration when matching chairs to work tasks, particularly in tasks involving a significant amount of recline. The Short and Mid height office chairs appeared to be most beneficial for the lumbar spine during the more reclined postures we studied. The shorter backrest height promoted a more neutral lumbar spine posture and, in turn, a decrease in LES muscular demands. However, despite a more neutral lumbar spine posture, neck flexion increased with the Short and Mid backrest heights. Thus, caution must be exercised when choosing a shorter backrest height for a reclined type office task, as it appears that an improvement in lumbar spine posture comes with a tradeoff for the neck. The Forward posture here relates well to office tasks involving desk work. The Forward posture was minimally influenced by backrest height, which was not surprising as minimal contact with the backrest is achieved during such tasks. Similarly, the Upright posture was also minimally influenced by backrest height, and this is likely attributable to the limited contact with the backrest during light computer work type tasks.
