Magnetic oscillation can also be used to increase the width of welds. Magnetic control can be used to reduce the disruptive effects of arc blow. A four-pole magnetic probe is used to reduce arc deflection and maintain the arc position. Oscillators deflect the arc longitudinally or laterally over the weld pool without moving the welding electrode or wire feed. The oscillators consist of electromagnets located close to the arc, powered by a variable-polarity, variable-amplitude power source.
Manufacturing and automation as a recovery path toward sustainable growth
Published in Harish Hirani, Technological Innovations for Effective Pandemic Response, 2023
The effective implementation of manufacturing technologies will play a very important role in increasing the productivity of all manufacturing industries. Majority of R&D institutes emphasize on the development and application of advanced/innovative technical interventions (i.e., additive manufacturing, IoT-based manufacturing) required by MSMEs and can provide economical solutions to micro to small enterprises. This book chapter highlights the standard operating procedures to be followed in different manufacturing processes to avoid the rejections in components. The common mistakes often made by MSME personnel in machining, casting and welding are elaborated and its remedies are discussed in detail. Also, the new trends in manufacturing such as special-purpose machines, micromachining and 3D printing, which are practiced globally, are introduced in this book chapter. The chapter covers the importance of skill development and safety aspects in MSMEs to revolutionize the productivity of small clusters and bring them to new horizons. Salient features of this chapter include:Mistakes in machining occur due to improper selection of cutting tools and cutting parameters, which leads to underproduction, underutilization of machine and/or cutting tools, premature failure of tools and/or machine parts.Defects in welding like porous weld, undercutting, distortions spatter, etc. occur due to too long/short arc length, too high welding current, arc blow, etc. Awareness regarding appropriate process parameter selection will increase the productivity of weld products.Sand casting industries require sand testing, such as AFS GFN, clay content permeability, etc., prior to molding. Proper gating must be designed to allow the mold to fill rapidly with negligible turbulence. If possible, follow simulation of the casting process to ensure proper filling of the molds. There is a need to invest in skill development programs so that skilled manpower is available for industrial growth. This will increase the spread of technological interventions in majority of the manufacturers across the country. Some of the new technologies such as special-purpose machines, 3D printing, micromachining, Industry 4.0 integrated “advanced manufacturing technologies” and concept of servitization may be learnt via skill development programs.
Tomographic measurement of current density and heat input density for tilting TIG arc

However, it is assumed in these studies that the arc examined is axisymmetric and the methods cannot be applied to non-axisymmetric phenomena. In actual TIG welding, the arc may unexpectedly collapse due to the effects of magnetic arc blow and may become instead a non-axisymmetric form due to magnetism control [12]. Also, on many occasions this welding has to be carried out at a tilted angle for reasons of visibility and, although there is a consequent need to understand the input of the TIG arc into the base metal in these circumstances [13], there have been almost no reports of experimental measurements.
