Information fingerprinting and its application

SimHash is a special kind of information fingerprint, created by Moses Charikar in 2002. However, the first time it gained wide recognition was not until Google Crawler used it for webpage duplicate detection and published the results in the Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on World Wide Web. Although Charikar's paper is rather obscure, the principle of SimHash is not too complicated to understand. We shall illustrate this with an example of Google Crawler's duplicate detection during webpage downloads.

Malhotra and Bakal have introduced a new approach using a hybrid fingerprint extracting with simhash algorithm and Huffman coding for deduplication model in the cloud. This model had used the mutual information similarity. Moreover, the authors have extracted the metadata with SOMI-GO for clustering the data [34].
