Service choreography

Service choreography is a decentralized workflow or process that involves chaining services together to execute a specific transaction. It is characterized by the interactions between clients and services, resulting in a collaborative and coordinated effort to achieve a common goal. Service choreography, by contrast, refers to a decentralized workflow/process that results from each client–service interaction. In other words, each client is aware of its own interactions, but it is not necessarily aware of the interactions between other clients and services. Nevertheless, all client–service interactions form a workflow/process.

There was little consensus on when to use orchestration and when choreography in microservice architecture. While most of the interviewees had experience with SOA orchestration, very few had experience with event-based architectures and service choreography. And although most of the interviewees understood that microservice architecture encourages choreography over orchestration, there was a general consensus that some level of orchestration may be required with more complex business processes.
