Project Resource Planning
Published in Davies A. Igberaese, Introduction to Project Management, 2023
For adequate documentation of team members’ roles and responsibilities, the hierarchical chart presented for the project organization is complemented by both the matrix format and the textural format. A widely used matrix type chart for showing responsibility assignment in project management is the RACI Matrix Chart. The RACI Matrix Chart is a Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM) that indicates the work to be done in the left column and the persons respectively responsible (R), accountable (A), consultable (C), and ‘informable’ (I) in the right column. RAM can be developed at various levels. At a higher level, for instance, a RAM can be done to depict the responsibility assignment of WBS components to project group units, while other RAMs are developed at the lower level to show responsibility assignments for members of each of the project group units.
Project Resource Management

The responsibility assignment matrix (RAM) defines project roles and responsibilities in terms of work packages and activities. On large projects, a high-level RAM can define responsibilities of a project team, group, or unit for each WBS component. Lower-level RAMs are used in the team to show roles, responsibilities, and levels of authority for specific activities. The matrix shows all activities associated with one person, and all people associated with an activity. It is a tool and technique in data representation in Plan Resource Management. [Planning]

A responsibility assignment matrix (RAM) is used in linking activities to resources in order to ensure that all work components are assigned to an individual or team. One format for this is to define four category roles in the responsibility assignment—Responsible, Accountable, Consult, and Inform. This is called a RACI chart, because it assigns those roles for each work unit.
A template-based approach for responsibility management in executable business processes

A Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RAM) provides a way to plan, organise and coordinate work that consists of assigning different degrees of responsibility to the members of an organisation for each activity undertaken in it (Website 2016). RAMs were defined independently of Business Process Management (BPM) and thus, they are suitable for both process- and non process-oriented organisations. In the context of RAMs, the different responsibilities that may be assigned to an activity are usually called roles or task duties (Cabanillas et al. 2015b).
