Process migration

Process migration refers to the transfer of a running process, including its code, data, and running state, from one machine to another in a distributed system. This is done for various reasons, such as dynamic load distribution, fault resilience, system administration, and data access locality. Global Process Management: Existing process management is enhanced with the use of the global process management which provides globally unique process ids for each process in the cluster so that each node is aware of the location and status of the other processes. This feature is useful in process migration, wherein a process during its lifetime can be transferred from one node to another to balance the computational loads, as well as to make ease of computation in different nodes or to achieve computation speed-up. A migrated process in that situation should be able to continue using the same pathnames to access files from a new node. The use of a distributed file system, in particular, facilitates this feature to work. The threads of a single process, however, must be on the same node.

Process migration is the transfer of a part or the entire running process from one node to another under the designed conditions. Any system using process migration should have the capability of running the process on each of the systems’ node. In general, the HPC systems use a process migration for process transition and its management (Barak, Margolin, & Shiloh, 2012; Barak & Shiloh, 2013; Medina & García, 2014).
