An example of such type of application system is Node-Red that works as a programming tool for IoT platform. It may be installed on Raspberry Pi and many other devices [58, 61]. IoT in data analytics is useful in manufacturing, health systems and telematics, etc.
Cyber-based design for additive manufacturing using artificial neural networks for Industry 4.0

In a cyber manufacturing environment, the availability of additive manufacturing machines on the cyber network determines their assignment to specific part designs. An IoT device simulator was used to retrieve information on the AM machine availability and capability based on the ANN outputs. A Node-RED IoT device simulator was implemented to create a cyber interface IoT simulator (Node-RED, n.d.). Node-Red is a visual tool for wiring the IoT using an open source software. It allows connecting devices, APIs, and online services together by using a browser-based flow editor. All nodes are wired together to account for different tasks in the cyber environment and create the desired flow. Each node was programmed to initiate an input trigger and subsequent action tasks resulting in an output which determined the machine availability and resource capability.
Versatile IT-system architecture for smart manufacturing solutions: the example for green manufacturing

In the following, the definitions for the overall system are described beginning with the selection of the abstraction layers to be used. From previous investigations and tests in a laboratory environment, the combination of Node-RED as common runtime environment and Docker for container virtualization has already proven to be well suited. Node-RED is a cross-platform flow-based programming environment for programming and interconnecting IOT devices. Besides a good extensibility with own software modules, many existing modules created by a broad community can be used. Devices intended for industrial use also increasingly support Node-RED as standard. Docker is characterized by its wide distribution and the availability of tools for container management.
