Reading digital news on smartphones is increasingly popular among the Chinese. News aggregator applications provide diverse and personalized information through gathering news from various sources and distributing multimedia content based on user’s idiosyncratic needs and preferences, and they have become a popular way to access daily news. Statistics from a report in November 2019 indicated that two news aggregators (Toutiao and Yidianzixun) ranked among the top three popular news apps in terms of average daily active users (DAU), and the duration of daily active users of the two apps have both exceeded 80 min (iiMedia Report, 2019), outperforming other news apps, further speaking to their immense popularity.
