Some of the newly emerging internet companies have already proven the feasibility of using software running on top of commodity hardware to serve literally millions of users. Google File System is a software technology that helps Google operating a storage system on a global scale (Ghemawat, Gobioff, and Leung 2003). BlobStore is another software technology developed by Google for storing binary data, such as photos or videos (Dewan and Hansdah 2011). Facebook, as the world’s largest social media player, is another example. Engineers at Facebook designed their own storage system to provide low-latency and high-throughput storage for the billions of photos that are regularly uploaded by users around the world (Muralidhar et al. 2014; Huang et al. 2013).
