Fuzzy cognitive map

A fuzzy cognitive map is a representation of a belief system in a given domain that can be presented graphically or mathematically. It consists of nodes that represent changeable quantities, typically characteristics of the underlying concept represented that can increase or decrease. The fuzzy cognitive map is a model of a certain fragment of reality and presents knowledge about the cause and effect relationships observed in it. It consists of objects and impacts exerted by these objects on each other. The specificity of models created with the use of fuzzy cognitive maps is that the objects from which these models are composed and the impacts between them have the properties of fuzzy sets. Thus objects can be equivalents of abstract and immeasurable concepts such as events, actions, goals, values (Groumpos 2010; Stylios and Groumpos 1999), characteristics of systems, variables that affect them and their states, as well as system inputs and outputs (Leon et al. 2010). The strengths of impacts between the objects express the degree of causality, i.e. the extent to which the improvement of one object will improve (positively impact) or worsen (negatively impact) the other object.

A Fuzzy Cognitive Map is a representation of a belief system in a given domain. It comprises of concepts (C) representing key concepts of the real system, joined by directional edges of connections (w), which represent causal relationships between concepts. Each connection is assigned a weight wij, which quantizes the strength of the causal relationship between concepts Ci and Cj (Dickerson and Kosko 1994).
