There have been several international efforts in recent years to standardise computable representations of regulatory knowledge. For example, the work by OASIS (Organisation for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) in standardising the Akoma Ntoso (Architecture for Knowledge-Oriented Management of African Normative Texts using Open Standards and Ontologies) schema into LegalDocML (OASIS 2016). BuildingSMART International also took a similar initiative with their recent work in the Regulatory Room (BuildingSMART 2016).
A knowledge-based document assembly method to support semantic interoperability of enterprise information systems

Among the many available legal document formats (see Marković et al. 2014), Akoma Ntoso (2019) has experienced the broadest adoption and is the basis for the future OASIS LegalDocML standard (OASIS 2019a). Presented in an XML format for the representation of parliamentary, legislative, and judiciary documents, Akoma Ntoso provides a technology-neutral approach for legal documentation that improves interoperability between government bodies and reduces the costs for information systems (Chalmeta and Pazos 2015). For example, the Akoma Ntoso schema has proven its suitability to describe the structure of judgements in the Serbian judiciary (Marković et al. 2014). Although service contracts are not part of the Akoma Ntoso specification, methods for extending its original structure are available to support other document types. For custom document types that use the Akoma Ntoso vocabulary, a generic element doc is available, while it is also possible to meet specific requirements by redefining the Akoma Ntoso schema.
