Transportation Management
Published in Mohamed Achahchah, Lean Transportation Management, 2018
A standard part of project management is to create, update, distribute, store, and maintain an action list so that all team members know what is expected from them when and to hold them accountable for the progress. It is recommended to use an implementation checklist to verify if all elements are in place for a successful go-live. Important to remember is that each change is tested before it is implemented. An important input for the implementation plan is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). SOPs contain detailed written instructions to achieve the required performance per individual process and distilled agreements from contracts into easy-to-understand work instructions. A SOP can serve also as a training program for new and existing employees and needs to be regularly updated to be taken serious by the employees and respect the predefined ways of working. Changes can be processed through change requests. An example SOP content list is shown in Figure 3.8.
Operating a flight
Published in Peter J. Bruce, Yi Gao, John M. C. King, Airline Operations, 2018
Prior to any discussion of a typical airline flight, the concept of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) must be understood. A SOP is a documented set of accurate and detailed instructions which articulate specific ways to perform a process or procedure. Their purpose is to ensure that the procedure is performed in a standardized manner, i.e., the same way, every time by every person. The absence of SOPs would inevitably lead to well-intentioned individuals performing tasks with degrees of differentiation, thereby introducing potential risk. Well-communicated and understood instructions ensure that, irrespective of background and experience, all those performing a task or procedure do so in the same manner. Much can be said of the background and history of SOPs. Suffice it to say here that a key learning outcome from aviation accidents has been that adherence to a set of SOPs provides an effective safety control. The US FAA defines the scope and contents of SOPs.6 The SOPs defined in AC 120-71 includes items related to:general operations policies (i.e., non-type-related)airplane operating matters (i.e., type-related).
Safe Operating Procedures
Published in Charles D. Reese, Occupational Safety and Health, 2017
A standard or safe operating procedure is a document that describes the regularly recurring operation relevant to quality and safe performance. The purpose of an SOP is to carry out the operations correctly and always in the same manner. An SOP should be available at the place where the work is done. SOPs are organizational tools that provide a foundation for training new employees, for refreshing the memories of management and experienced employees, and for ensuring that important procedures are carried out in a standard specified way. The principal function of an SOP is to provide detailed, step-by-step guidance to employees who are required to carry out a certain procedure. In this instance, it serves not only as a training aid but also as a means of helping to ensure that the procedure is carried out in a standard, approved manner.

The essence of the control phase is to ensure that the process capability and performance are not compromised. This can be achieved by measuring and comparing the performance of the system with the benchmark (Daniyan et al., 2022). The control phase ensures that the implementation of the plans for monitoring the system’s performance and taking corrective action where deviations are detected. This is aimed at further improving the process or sustaining the improved process. This phase is also necessary for process improvement and enhancing future process performance. The control activities implemented during this phase include the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) where all necessary especially the assembly of the underframe, bogie frame and components assembly/sub assembly. With the SOP, regular documentation and review of the manufacturing process by the compliance team was ensured. The SOP provides a procedural step for repetitive process to minimise stress, errors, and communication gaps. The use of SOP will ensure process and production efficiency, and reliability, with improvement in product for routine activities. The 5S (sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain) was also implemented to minimise the rate of defective product.

Clearly, management measures can be taken to ensure that the process parameter settings follow SOPs. For instance, an SOP checklist can be provided to regulate and inspect the setting procedures. The excessive variance in the inner diameter can also be inspected using the Taguchi experiments with orthogonal arrays. Aside from processing speed and tool angle, the design of the tool is also an important factor. Different designs can be regarded as different levels. In this way, the optimal combination of process parameters can be identified, and the experiment data can be provided to the tool suppliers so that they can manufacture tools of quality that have easy-to-clamp handles. Precision index measures process variance, so statistical analyses of the precision indices before and after improvement can be used to confirm whether remedial actions have significantly reduced the variance.
