Since its discovery and usefulness detection, piracetam has been used as a nootropic agent for the enhancement of memory in human beings with Alzheimer’s disease. Piracetam is an exceptional nootropic with low contagiousness and insolubility levels and incurs a small number of side effects. Some sources suggest that piracetam overall effect on lowering depression and anxiety is higher than on improving memory [14]. However, depression is reported to be an occasional adverse effect of piracetam. It has been found to increase blood flow and oxygen consumption in parts of the brain, but this may be a side effect of increased brain activity rather than a primary effect or mechanism of action for the medication [15]. Furthermore, it is also used for the reduction of symptoms associated with anxiety, withdrawal from alcohol, and clinical depression. Figure 25.4 shows the piracetam molecule.

Cognitive ability is the measure of a person’s mental and physical capabilities to assess, compute and perform any task using brain motor skills. At present, the cognitive ability of a person can be enhanced by both medication and meditation. The brain functions are elevated by promoting cognitive processing and improving brain structure by practicing mindfulness meditation [238]. The drugs, supplements, and other substances that claim to improve cognitive function are known as nootropics. These drugs are mainly of three types called methylphenidate, modafinil and piracetam [239].

Piracetam (2-(2-Oxopyrrolidin-1-yl)acetamide; trade name Nootropil®), is a nootropic drug used in the therapy of age-related cognitive disturbances and poststroke aphasia. Clinical experience has also shown that at high doses, it is effective against cortical myoclonus, Genton and van Vleymen (2000).
