In the current scenario, the weight reduction of automotive, aerospace, and defence structures is of paramount importance to improve fuel consumption from a transportation point of view. In line with this, magnesium, which has a density of ~25% steel and ~60% aluminium, is ideal for the transportation industry. Some newly developed magnesium alloys (i.e., Elektron, AZ31HP-O, and AZ91E), particularly developed with doping the rare earth elements, can withstand against impact loading in various electronics, automobile, and aerospace applications. However, their poor corrosion resistance is still a major concern for the materials community. The main focus of the present chapter is to emphasize the applications of SCs on structural materials that are being used for automobile, aerospace, and defence structures. Therefore, we limit our discussion to these common but important structural materials, thereby serving the purpose of the chapter.

The authors are grateful to Mr. Rick DeLorme and Dr. Bruce Davis of Magnesium Elektron, Inc. NA for providing the WE43 alloy sheets. The work was performed under a cooperative agreement between the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the University of North Texas (W911NF-13-2-0018). The authors also thank the Center for Advanced Research and Technology (CART) for providing access to the microscopic facilities at the University of North Texas.

Subsequent to digestion, the debris containing fluids was filtered through 0.1 μm nuclepore filters (Whatman International Ltd, Maidstone, United Kingdom) in a vacuum filtration system, and then was mounted on an SEM aluminium stub and sputter coated in gold for 60 s at 30 mA using an Agar automatic sputter coater (Agar Scientific, Elektron Technology UK Ltd, Essex, United Kingdom).
