4-methyl-1-pentene

4-methyl-1-pentene is a co-monomer that is often used in copolymerization with ethylene to create a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with exceptional physical properties such as tensile strength, impulse strength, peeling strength, puncture resistance, and acid-base resistance. It is an advanced α-olefin that is commonly used alongside 1-Octene as a co-monomer. Identification: Thermoplastic [3]. Cl, N, S, P normally absent. Burns with bluish, non-smoky flame with flaring molten drops. Little or no residue, waxy, slightly acrid odour on extinction. On pyrolysis becomes transparent, melts at about 1708 and decomposes at about 350° with evolution of low MW hydrocarbons. The isotactic index [4] is the fraction insoluble in boiling heptane though on a commercial basis, solubility in xylene or decalin is used to determine a measure of stereoregularity [5]. Because of the lack of chemical reactivity, physical tests are normally preferred. Polypropylene floats in water like polyethylene polyethylene (PE) and poly(4-methyl-1-pentene polymethylpentene) (PMP); floats in isophorone (distinct from PE) and sinks in 80/20 v/v. alcohol/ water (distinct from PMP) [3]. Spot test: HgO in H2SO4 gives a yellow colour [45]

Moreover, due to its high quality, copolymer of 4MP1/Ethylene can be applied as a material for organic synthesis in the fine chemical field to prepare electrical circuits, synthetic leather, and medical instruments (Tao and Zhang, 2006; Wang and Jing, 2010).
